Yes, friends, the Great EsSkate 2004 is back. and it's hungry. For skaters, that is . you, and all your friends, and their friends, and the people down the block, in the cellar and hanging by their wheels from those trees over there.

For the uninitiated, (and there must be one such human left in the Western Hemisphere), the Great EsSkate is a weekend blast of skates 'n sun in Miami Beach, a non-stop party on wheels, a skittering, rollicking riot of rolling wherein our wild-eyed participants skate the blazes out of the highways and byways and waterways of Our Fair City. Ok, not actually ON the waterways, but right next to them.

Best of all it happens in February. We've heard that some areas of the country do not have average daily temperatures in the 70s at that time of year. That's hard for us to fathom, but if it turns out to be true, hey, come on down here and grab some sun!

Anyway, enough of that. Let's talk specifics:

THE DateS: February 6-8, 2004

THE BEDROOMS (THOSE PLACES YOU WON'T BE DOING MUCH SLEEPING IN): Shelborne Beach Resort Hotel

OUR PITIABLY SMALL REGISTRATION FEE: $75 until November 30, $89.00 thereafter.

HOW TO APPLY: Go to Active.com, (http://active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1091661)

or a not so pretty mail-in form is attached for your convenience.

Those of you who attended last year's GES remember the Shelborne, which is right smack on the sand in the historic South Beach section of Miami Beach. We have 150 rooms ready at $149.95/night + tax. There is a 2 night minimum stay. The rooms are on a first come basis and must be booked by the individual with the hotel Monday-Friday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM eastern time by calling 800-327-8757. As of today more than 1/3 of the rooms were already taken. Please keep in mind the hotel was sold out for 2003 in just a few days.

NOW, AS TO THAT PITIABLY SMALL Fee:

Your Organizing Committee looked at the proposed budget for 2004 and decided to reduce our expenses and pass the actual dollar savings on to you in the form of a significantly lower registration for 2004. Last year's rate was $89.00. This year the rate is $75.00, a savings of. wait, I can figure this out, hmm... subtract 4, carry the 9, deduct and divide by the Gross National Product of Iceland, throw out all variables, marmosets and greenie stickum caps... dot the ts, cross the eyes.. Okay! $14.00.

Of course, this is a fundraiser, so we hope that after you've eaten and drunk your fill at all the amazing SoBe restaurants within a few easy kick strokes of the hotel you'll whip out your ATM cards, drain what's left of your bank accounts, empty the roll of singletons from the sock under the bed and splurge on a cascade of raffle tickets or GREAT ESKATE 2004 merchandise.

AND FINALLY, you've told us through the survey that you really liked the event, the hotel and the skates last year. but wanted more time for the beach and nightlife. You said nothing about sleeping, so we've left it out of your plans. Instead we're giving you more open time so you can eat, drink and dance yourself into a stupor. Then put on your skates and skate some more!

See you there, er, here!
